Many years ago I purchased a four pack of location tags for keys and such. I dutifully attached these to various keyrings that could be lost. I regularly tested them in case the battery ran low. I never had to replace the batteries. And then I got a little complacent. I stopped testing as frequently as I did before (it was once a month, then once every two months, then once in a while).
